Asere Mantse To Set Up Education Fund

The Paramount Chief of Asere, a division of the Ga State, Nii Nikoi Olai Amashie III, has announced plans to set up an educational fund to support the development of the youth in his paramountcy.

Nii Amashie III said education was the catalyst for development and the best way to create opportunities for people to achieve their potential in life.

According to him, as future leaders of the country, the youth ought to be supported in all fields not just to achieve their aspirations in life but for the prosperity and development of the country.

“Recently, I saw on social media that a young man in medical school called Tagoe needed help to complete his studies. His name shows that he is from Asere.

With the Asere Educational Fund, we would therefore be able to support such people for the development of Asere and the country as a whole,” he said.

The Asere Mantse made this known in an interaction with the media after a meeting with some elders at the Asere stool house near Bukom in Accra.

Paramount Chiefs

Nii Amashie III’s initiative to set up an educational fund followed his recent elevation as a Paramount Chief by the Ga Mantse, King Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

The Asere Mantse was part of six chiefs who have been elevated to paramount status by the Ga Mantse.

The rest are the Akanmadjen Mantse, Nii Ayikai III; Otublohum Mantse, Nii Dodoo Nsaki II; Sempe Mantse, Nii Adote Otintor II; Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II and the  Abola Mantse, Nii Ahele Nunoo III.

They were recently introduced to the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs at Dodowa during a colourful ceremony and will soon become members of the House after the amendment of Chieftaincy (Membership of the Regional House of Chiefs) Instrument, 2020, L.I.2409.

Unity

Nii Amashie III said despite being one of the biggest divisions of the Ga State with vast lands, for many years, Asere had been plagued by infighting, misunderstanding and lack of unity.

Such a situation, he said, had affected the development and the progress of the people of Asere.

He said it was time Asere and the entire Ga state came together, chart a new path and focus on issues relating to the welfare and development of people.

He said failure to do that would be catastrophic, and posterity would not be kind to all those who failed to put the interest of Asere, the Ga state and the entire country above their parochial interests.

According to him, those with progressive mindset have decided to steer Ga to greater heights and therefore those who refused to join the train of “unity and development” must realise that they were doing a disservice to themselves and the future generation.

Social Enterprise Ghana, GIZ Holds Research Validation Workshop

Social Enterprise Ghana (SE Ghana) with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Agribiz programme today organised a one day Research Validation Workshop.

The objectives of the workshop amongs other things is to deliberate on the report “State of Agribusinesses Social Enterprises in Ghana”

The workshop brought together, participants from Academia, Agribusiness Entrepreneurs, Foundees of other social Enterprises as well as stakeholders in the SE ecosystem.

Social Enterprise Ghana (SE Ghana) is an organisation that seeks to bring together all the players in the social enterprise sector in Ghana to build a stronger social enterprise ecosystem and increase its impact.

Presenting the research findings and Methodologies on “State of Agribusiness Social Enterprises”  to the attendees of the workshop, Professor Ernest Asamoah, disclosed that the total number of Social Enterprises (SEs) in Ghana as at 2022 is estimated to be One Hundred and Fifteen Thousand Five Hundred (115,500), representing 5.5% of total Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) prevalent rate.

Explaining further, the researcher who is also a Professor of Risk and Strategy, indicated that 5 out of every 10 MSMEs in the country represents an SE thus; a confirmation of the 5.5% prevalent rate as mentioned earlier.

Touching on contribution of SEs in Ghana, Professor Asamoah pointed out that SEs have created a total of 808,500 Direct Jobs contributing about 3.35% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. Also SEs contribute 3.4 Million Workforce in Ghana as well as 3.4% contribution to Employment and GHs 23.1Billion ($2.6BN) Annual Turnover.

On Challenges, Prof. Asamoah  recalled, the major challenge his team encounted were Limited Access to Capital sating more that 60% of SEs have not had access to any form of capital including grant.

“Lack of access to capital is seen as the biggest barrier to growth, followed by
lack of access to grant funding,” he added.

Agribusiness

An estimated 63,294 Social Enterprises are into agribusiness constituting 54.8% of total Social enterprises in Ghana. According the report, a total of Forty Hundred and Forty-three Fifty-five One  (443,051) Direct Employment has been created by  Agribusiness Social Enterprises out of which
Over 70% of the employees are youth whiles 45% are female working in the Agribusiness Social Enterprises.

Another significant contribution of Agribusiness SEs is 84% contribution to GDP With an estimated USD$ 1.43 Billion contributed to the economy by Social Enterprise Agribusinesses in Ghana also an amount of  GHs12.66 BN being annual turnover.

Challenges of Agribusiness Social Enterprises includes;
Low Access to Investors, Lack of Awareness of Social Enterprises, High Interest rate and Cost of Capital to operate SE businesses.

Interview with the media after his presentation, Prof. Asamoah called for the need for a legal regime and recognition in which Social Enterprises can register as such and appropriate policies applied. “This when applied, would lead to SEs obtaijing some lecel of  reduction in the 25% tax liability for companies in general,” he stresses.

“We need to move from operating  Agriculture as being a way of life thus; “culture”  engagement into a business engagement and by so doing, we will be able to use Agriculture to generate business to solve the mirage of environmental and social issues including unemployment,” the lead researcher noted.

For his part, Edwin Zu- Cudjoe, the Executive Director of Social Enterprise Ghana, reiterated that the import of the research is to look at ways that the Agribusiness can be innovated and also bring more inclusivety, making way for more people with disabilities (PWDs), refugees, young people in the Agribusiness space  whiles bringing lots of technology innovation into the Agribusiness space to help develop and make Agribusiness very friendly to young people whiles creating more jobs to support in uplifting people from poverty as well as curbing food security issues whiles improving on good nutrition to the vulnerable people in the country.

Mr. Zu- Cudjoe hinted, Agribusiness Social Enterprises need the enabling environment amd support in order to grow and thrive and become sustainable.

The Executive Director of SEG remarked, his outfit  believes that this is a very good report for them to use to engage  Government Agencies Policy Makers and various Stakeholders to look at how they  could support young people to participate in the Agribusiness space.

“We will use this document to engage various ecosystem players so that they can create the enabling environment for Agribusinesses that are Social Enterprises to thrive and grow, “he stressed.

This according to him, Nigerians yearning for a better and peaceful country is evidence that with a leader of good character, Nigeria can be great again.

In a statement issued and signed in Accra dated March 1, 2023 by Amb. Oloye Fatuyi Oyeyemi said “my utmost gratitude goes to the ever resilient Nigeria youths, your peaceful conduct during and after the election is commendable, even though the politicians as usual in their trade disrupted this election in various ways, but you proved to them that no amount of intimidation and harassment can defeat you”. He said.

The statement further stated that the Presidential election has ended and while the leaders of all other parties are dealing with the legality and credibility of the election, it is imperative for Nigerians not to go to sleep as there is a Gubernatorial  election ahead of us.

Amb. Oloye Fatuyi Oyeyemi noted that there is no hope for a nation without a leader with integrity and sincere heart adding that; Nigeria deserves the best at this time in their  lives saying with them in charge of the grassroot, good governance is assured.

The statement further called on supporters of the Labour Party to go all out to vote for the Governorship candidates of the Labour Party in their respective states on March 11, 2023.

“For those that pride themselves in electoral fraud, they should remember that ” a man who goes and collects termite infested firewood from the forest must not complain when his or her bedroom is infested”. The statement bemoaned.

Amb. Oloye Fatuyi Oyeyemi stated that a party without structure as they refer to the Labour Party, it’s presidential candidate, His Excellency Peter Obi has shown to the world “that you can be anything you want in life within the validation of anyone.

God heal Nigeria and create a new heart in us”. It concluded

Export Revenue From Gold Hits $6.6Bn In 2022….. Lands Minister

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has said export earnings from Gold for year 2022, was a whooping $6 .6 billion, making it a leading source of foreign exchange earnings fid ghe country.

The sector Minister made the above statement when he took his turn to brief the media during the periodical Ministers’ press briefing series held in Accra yesterday.

Touching on Developments in the Mininig Sector, Mr. Jinapor  reiterated that mining continues to be one of the main pillars of our economy. According to him, the sector retained its position as the leading source of export revenue. Export receipts in 2022 from gold alone was over Six point Six Billion US Dollars (US$6,600,000,000.00).

Following significant investments in exploration, four (4) new large scale mining operations will start production within the next two and half years. There are, also, significant investments in the redevelopment and expansion of existing mines. After reviving the Obuasi mine in 2019, the Bibiani mine, which had been dormant for seven (7) years, has also been revived, and production started in October last year. These investments will result in a significant increase in our mineral production and Government revenue.

“To promote more investment in the sector, we are, currently, undertaking a general review of the Mining Policy adopted in 2014, and the Minerals and Mining Act which was passed in 2006, to align them with current developments in the mining industry,” he added.

Local Content and Local Participation

As part of measures to promote job creation in the mining industry through the use of local expertise, goods and services, last year, the Minerals Commission increased the items on the Local Procurement List of goods and services reserved for Ghanaians from twenty-nine (29) to forty-one (41), and this year, the number has again been increased to fifty (50).

The new additions include the provision of medical services at mine sites, construction and management of Tailings Storage Facilities, assaying and motor rewinding. We have also increased the provision of financial, insurance and reinsurance services reserved for Ghanaians, from twenty percent (20%) to a minimum of sixty percent (60%). The provision of these goods and services by Ghanaians will ensure that we retain, here in our country, some Three Billion US Dollars, (US$3,000,000,000.00), annually, which would have otherwise been exported.

Value Addition

Discussions are ongoing with Rand Refinery of South Africa, a London Bullion Marketing Association (LBMA) Referee, to secure LBMA certification to enable us easily export and trade our refined gold on the international market. PMMC’s jewellery subsidiary is now able to produce gold tablets, engrave and plate jewellery, and this will be a major boost for their work. The plan, going forward, is to establish a Gold Souk, a market place for manufacturing and marketing of gold articles, here in Ghana.

The implementation of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC)’s Four-Project Agenda is on course. Drilling and Mineral Resource Estimation on two (2) hills in Awaso, under Project 1, will soon commence, to expand the existing mine, and significant amount of work has been done on the other three Projects. Mineral Resource Estimation for iron ore is, also, underway at the Akpafu deposit to determine its tonnage, grade and value.

Diversification of mineral resource base

The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) continues to intensify limestone exploration activities in the Mamprusi West District to develop limestone mines to feed the cement industry. Over three thousand acres (3,000 acres) of land has been identified as suitable for clinker production. The Authority has, also, identified and evaluated over one thousand, two hundred and seventy-five metric tonnes (1,275 Mt) of Clay resources at Assin Fosu and its environs in the Assin North and Central Districts of the Central Region, suitable for the production of high quality assay crucibles, bricks, tiles and electrical porcelain.

Regulation of Small Scale Mining

To support the small scale subsector, last year, Government reduced withholding tax on unprocessed gold by small scale miners, which was introduced in 2015, from three percent (3%) to one point five percent (1.5%). This has resulted in a massive increment in gold exports from small scale mining, from three thousand four hundred and twenty-nine point nine one kilogrammes (3,429.91kg) in 2021, to twenty-two thousand, one hundred and fifty-eight point two five kilogrammes (22,158.25kg) in 2022, that is about six hundred percent (600%) increment.

The Ministry continues to implement its two-pronged approach of law enforcement and reformation to deal with illegal mining. Thus, river bodies remain “Red Zones” for mining, while reconnaissance, prospecting and/or exploration in Forest Reserves continue to be suspended, except in exceptional circumstances. Five speed boats have been procured to patrol our river bodies.

We are, also, implementing the Minerals and Mining (Mineral Operations – Tracking of Earthmoving and Mining Equipment) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2404), and we expect to track some four thousand (4,000) excavators and other earth moving equipment.

So far, a control room has been established at the Minerals Commission, and seventy-five (75) excavators at various mine sites have been installed with tracking devices.

We continue to promote responsible small scale mining through Community Mining Schemes. Last year, fourteen (14) of these schemes were commissioned. And last month, I commissioned the first Community Mining for the year in Bongo-Soe in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region. In the coming days, new Community Mining Schemes will be commissioned in Bole in the Savannah Region, Wa in the Upper West Region, and Nangruma in the North East Region.

All these Schemes are supported with Gold Katchas to help small scale miners extract gold from the ore without the use of mercury.

The National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme, which President Akufo-Addo launched in 2021, is also being implemented to provide alternative sources of income for communities affected by the fight against illegal mining. The Programme employs several youths in the production of seedlings and reclamation of degraded mined lands. Currently, reclamation is ongoing over one thousand hectares (1,000 ha) of degraded lands in Ashanti, Eastern and Western North Regions.

This year, the Apprenticeship, Skills Training and Entrepreneurship module of the Programme will be rolled out, and is expected to provide training for some five thousand (5,000) youth in agriculture, technical, vocational, industrial, and mining skills.

These gamut of measures have yielded some positive results, with most of our river bodies visibly clearing up and the turbidity levels improving. That is not to suggest that we have rid the country of illegal mining. As speak, the cartels involved in these illegalities continue to operate, and are finding every means to outwit us. But we will continue to adopt the necessary measures to ensure that we come to grips with this canker.

Boundary Protection

The Ghana Boundary Commission has completed the construction of a land boundary terminus (Pillar 1) on the Ghana–Togo border, and paves way for us, this year, to commence the second phase of the boundary delineation. Land boundary reaffirmation exercises with Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, also continue unabated.

To build and enhance the capacities of stakeholders in relevant maritime frameworks and laws, as well as maritime boundary dispute pre-emption and resolution, the Commission will, this year, hold an international conference on “Maritime Boundaries and International Law in Africa.” This will help littoral African countries, including our neighbours, to gain an understanding of maritime frameworks and laws that govern the maritime space globally, to ensure the proper exploration and management of marine resources.

” I want to assure you, and the good people of Ghana, that Government, under the distinguished and outstanding leadership of President Akufo-Addo, will continue to adopt and implement policies necessary for the effective protection, preservation, management and utilisation of the lands and natural resources of our country for the benefit of the Ghanaian people,” he emphasised.
